Getting the proportions right

Table lamps are the most commonly mis-sized fitting in a room. Two rules cover most situations.

• Height — the lamp should be roughly two thirds the height of the piece it sits on, or for a bedside, tall enough that the bottom of the shade sits near eye level when you are sitting up in bed. Too low and it glares; too high and it lights the ceiling.
• Width — the shade should not overhang the surface, and ideally sits no wider than about half the width of a bedside table or console.

Where table lamps do the work

Bedsides — a pair gives symmetrical, controllable light at reading height, though a pair of wall lights is the better answer where surface space is tight. Consoles and hallways — a single lamp left on creates a welcoming low light that a ceiling fitting cannot. Sideboards and dining rooms — lamps either end give a softer alternative to overhead lighting when entertaining. Hotel guest rooms — the fitting guests actually reach for.

Choosing by material

Alabaster glows through the stone and reads as sculpture unlit. Porcelain, in the Lladró range, is decorative and highly detailed. Brass and bronze suit reading positions and traditional schemes. Glass is the lighter visual option for small surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a bedside table lamp be?

Tall enough that the bottom of the shade sits near eye level when you are sitting up in bed — usually 60–75cm overall, depending on bed and table height.

Should bedside lamps match?

A matched pair reads calmest and is the safest choice. Deliberately mismatched lamps work, but only when they share a material or a finish.

Can table lamps be dimmed?

It depends on the lamp fitted and whether the design has an inline switch or dimmer. Check the product page or contact us.

How long do they take to arrive?

Lladró arrives in approximately 2 weeks and Tala is generally in stock. CTO Lighting and Araco Lumière are made to order at approximately 5–7 weeks.
