Where wall lights earn their place

Wall lights do something ceiling fittings cannot: they light a room at eye level, which is far more flattering and far less flattening than light coming straight down. In practice they are specified in four situations.

  • Beside a bed — a pair frees both bedside tables and gives readable light without a lamp base taking up surface.
  • Flanking a mirror — light from either side at face height removes the shadows that a ceiling downlight casts under the eyes and chin.
  • Along a hallway or corridor — repeated at even spacing, wall lights make a narrow space feel considered rather than merely lit.
  • Either side of a fireplace or artwork — framing a feature rather than illuminating it directly.

Mounting heights that work

Bedside wall lights sit best at roughly 150–160cm from the floor, or around 60cm above the mattress, so the light falls onto a book rather than into the eyes. Beside a mirror, mount at about 165cm — roughly eye level for most adults. In a hallway run, 170–180cm and evenly spaced reads best.

Choosing by material

Alabaster glows through the stone for a soft, glare-free light — the best choice at bedsides and in bedrooms. Brass and bronze give a crisper, more directional light and suit hallways and reading positions. Glass is the more decorative option for dining rooms and reception spaces.

Bathroom specification

Standard wall lights are not rated for bathroom use. Selected CTO Lighting designs are available in IP44-rated versions suitable for Zone 2 and Zone 3. Zone 1 and anything within a shower enclosure requires a higher rating — contact us before specifying.

Trade and projects

Araco Interiors is a BIID Industry Partner. Wall lights are the most commonly repeated fitting in hotel bedroom and serviced apartment schemes, and trade pricing, DALI variants and multi-unit quotations are available across the range. Apply for trade pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a bedside wall light be mounted?

Around 150–160cm from the floor, or roughly 60cm above the mattress, so light falls onto a book rather than into your eyes.

Can wall lights be used in a bathroom?

Only IP44-rated versions, and only in Zone 2 and Zone 3. Selected CTO Lighting designs are available IP44-rated. Standard fittings are not suitable.

Do wall lights need a switch on the wall?

Not necessarily. Most are wired to a wall switch or a five-amp circuit, though some designs include an integral switch. Check the individual product page or contact us.

Should wall lights match the ceiling light?

They do not need to match, but they should relate — usually through a shared metal finish or material. Specifying both from one range is the simplest way to achieve that.

Are they sold individually or in pairs?

Individually, so you can order a single fitting or a matched run. For pairs and runs, order together where possible so pieces come from the same batch.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.

Frequently asked questions

Is this range suitable for trade and project use?
