Why a floor lamp rather than another ceiling light

Floor lamps solve a problem ceiling lighting cannot: they put light where people actually sit. A room lit only from above feels flat and institutional in the evening. A floor lamp beside a chair or at the end of a sofa creates a pool of light at reading height, and lets the ceiling fittings be dimmed right down.

They are also the easiest way to light a room that has no useful sockets near the seating, and the only lighting you can move when the furniture layout changes.

Choosing by position

  • Reading corner — an adjustable or task-style lamp, positioned slightly behind and to the side of the chair so light falls onto the page rather than into the eyes.
  • Beside a sofa — an arc or overhanging design reaches over the arm without needing a side table.
  • Empty corner — a sculptural alabaster or brass column adds height and warmth to dead space, and lifts the whole room at low brightness.
  • Behind a dining or console position — taller designs wash light up a wall and make a room feel larger after dark.

Choosing by material

Alabaster glows through the stone for soft ambient light and reads as sculpture when unlit. Brass and bronze give more directional light, which suits reading positions. Tala designs pair sculptural forms with their own low-energy lamps.

Trade and projects

Araco Interiors is a BIID Industry Partner. Floor lamps are widely specified in hotel lounges, suite seating areas and residential show homes where sockets and joinery are already fixed. Trade pricing and multi-unit quotations are available. Apply for trade pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a floor lamp be?

For reading beside a chair, the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level when seated — around 150–165cm overall. Taller sculptural designs are for ambient light rather than reading.

Where should a floor lamp go next to a sofa?

At the end of the sofa, slightly behind the arm, so the light falls over the shoulder. An arc design can stand further back and reach over.

Can floor lamps be dimmed?

Usually, depending on the lamp fitted and whether the design has an inline dimmer. Check the individual product page or contact us.

How long do they take to arrive?

Tala is generally in stock. CTO Lighting and Araco Lumière are made to order at approximately 5–7 weeks.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.
