How to size a chandelier

The most common mistake is going too small. A chandelier that looks substantial in a photograph often disappears once it is hung in a real room, particularly in a stairwell or a double-height hall.

  • Over a dining table — aim for roughly half to two thirds the width of the table, hung with the base 75–85cm above the tabletop.
  • In a room, not over furniture — add the room's length and width in feet; the result in inches is a reasonable starting diameter.
  • In a stairwell or double-height void — scale up considerably, and think in terms of vertical drop rather than diameter. The lowest point should stay above head height on the upper landing.

Choosing by material

Alabaster transmits light through natural stone, giving a warm, glare-free glow with unique veining in every piece — suited to calm, material-led interiors. Crystal refracts and sparkles, which reads as more formal and traditional. Porcelain, in the Lladró range, is sculptural and highly decorative. Brass and bronze give a warmer, more architectural result.

Frequently asked questions

How low should a chandelier hang over a dining table?

Around 75–85cm from the tabletop to the base of the fitting, which lights the table without blocking sightlines across it.

What size chandelier do I need?

Over a table, roughly half to two thirds the table width. In an open room, add the length and width of the room in feet and use that figure in inches as a starting diameter.

Do chandeliers work with low ceilings?

A full chandelier usually does not. For ceilings under about 2.4m, a flush or semi-flush ceiling light is the better choice.

Are alabaster chandeliers real stone?

Every alabaster piece sold by Araco Interiors is cut from genuine natural alabaster, so veining and tone vary between pieces.

Can you check a chandelier will fit before I order?

Yes. Email your ceiling height and room dimensions to sales@aracointeriors.com and we will confirm the right size and drop.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.
