What makes alabaster different from glass or resin

Alabaster is a natural gypsum stone, and it is translucent rather than transparent. Light passes through the body of the stone instead of reflecting off a surface, which is why an alabaster fitting glows rather than glares. Glass refracts and creates bright points; resin and opal diffusers scatter light evenly but flatly. Alabaster does something neither can: it carries the stone's own veining into the light, so the fitting reads as a material rather than a shade.

Because it is quarried rather than moulded, every piece has different veining, tone and density. Two lights of the same design will not match exactly. That variation is the point, and it is also why alabaster cannot be mass-produced to a uniform standard.

How to choose alabaster lighting

  • Pendants suit dining tables, kitchen islands and entrance halls. Hang the base roughly 75–85cm above a table or worktop to keep sightlines clear.
  • Linear pendants light long tables and islands evenly, where a single round fitting leaves the ends dim.
  • Wall lights work best in matched pairs — flanking a bed, mirror, fireplace or artwork — or repeated along a corridor.
  • Chandeliers anchor double-height halls, stairwells and larger dining rooms. Scale to the room, not the table.
  • Table and floor lamps add a warm low light layer that ceiling fittings cannot provide on their own.

Where alabaster lighting works

Alabaster suits calm, material-led interiors — schemes built on stone, oak, walnut, plaster and brass rather than high-gloss or high-colour finishes. It is used heavily in boutique hospitality because the light is flattering at seated height and produces no glare across polished tables. In residential work it is most often specified in principal bedrooms, dining rooms, entrance halls and dressing areas.

Alabaster lighting for trade and projects

Araco Interiors is a BIID Industry Partner. Trade pricing is available across the full alabaster range for interior designers, architects, developers, show home specialists and hospitality operators, with specification support and multi-unit quotations. Araco Lumière pieces are made to order at approximately 5–7 weeks, which suits project programmes where delivery is scheduled rather than immediate. Apply for trade pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is alabaster lighting real stone?

Every alabaster piece sold by Araco Interiors is cut from genuine natural alabaster. We do not sell imitation or alabaster-effect fittings under this collection.

Does alabaster lighting give enough light?

It gives ambient rather than task light. Alabaster diffuses the source through stone, so it lights a room warmly but will not replace task lighting over a worktop or a desk. Most schemes layer it with downlights or lamps.

Can alabaster lighting be dimmed?

Integrated LED pieces generally can, with a compatible trailing-edge dimmer. For G9 and E27 fittings it depends on the lamp fitted. Contact us for the specification on a particular design.

Will two alabaster lights match?

No, and they are not meant to. Veining and tone vary between pieces because the stone is quarried. If you are ordering a run for a project and need pieces from the same batch, tell us at the point of order.

How do you clean alabaster?

Dust with a dry soft cloth. Alabaster is porous and softer than marble, so avoid water, solvents and any abrasive cleaner.

Where can I buy alabaster lighting in the UK?

Araco Interiors ships alabaster lighting across the UK with free delivery on every order, and internationally to Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. We are online only, with UK phone and email support on 020 4524 7265.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.
