What a mirror light does

A mirror light combines a mirror with integrated illumination, so the light comes from the mirror itself rather than from a fitting above it. The practical advantage is the direction of the light: an overhead downlight casts shadows under the eyes, nose and chin, which is the worst possible light for dressing or applying make-up. Light emitted from around or behind the mirror falls evenly across the face.

The secondary benefit is space. In a dressing area or cloakroom with no room for a pair of wall lights either side, a mirror light does both jobs in one fitting.

Where to use one

  • Dressing areas and vanities — the primary use, and where the even light matters most
  • Cloakrooms — where wall space is too tight for flanking fittings
  • Bedroom dressing corners — giving a functional mirror a decorative role
  • Hotel guest bathrooms — where guests expect usable mirror lighting as standard

Bathroom specification

Bathroom installation requires an appropriate IP rating for the zone. Confirm the rating of a specific design with us before specifying it for a bathroom, and note that Zone 1 and anything within a shower enclosure requires a higher rating than Zone 2 or Zone 3.

Trade and projects

Araco Interiors is a BIID Industry Partner. Trade pricing and specification support are available. This is a small, focused range — if you need a particular size or configuration for a project, contact us and we will advise on what can be sourced. Apply for trade pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a mirror light better than a light above the mirror?

Light from above casts shadows under the eyes, nose and chin. Light from the mirror itself falls evenly across the face, which is why it is preferred for dressing and make-up.

Can mirror lights be used in a bathroom?

Only where the design carries the correct IP rating for the zone. Contact us to confirm the rating on a specific design before specifying it.

Do they need wiring in?

Generally yes — mirror lights are wired rather than plugged in. Confirm the requirement on the product page or with us before ordering.

What is the lead time?

Araco Lumière pieces are handcrafted to order at approximately 5–7 weeks.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.

Is the alabaster genuine natural stone?

Yes. Every alabaster piece we sell uses genuine honed natural alabaster. Because it is a natural stone, veining and translucency vary from piece to piece — this variation is intrinsic to the material.
