Bouclé Sofa Buying Guide: How to Choose a Bouclé Sofa That Lasts

Tommy Franks Frankie three seater sofa in Chex Polar bouclé

The short answer: choose a bouclé sofa by seat depth first, colour second and shape third. A deep seat (around 60cm or more) gives the relaxed, sink-in comfort bouclé is bought for; a warm off-white or oatmeal keeps it timeless; and a modular design is the safest choice if you might move house.

What is bouclé?

Bouclé is a fabric woven from looped yarn, which gives it a nubby, textured surface. The texture is what makes it popular in neutral interiors: it adds depth without adding colour, and it catches light differently across the day.

1. Measure the room, then the seat

  • Overall width: leave at least 45cm either side of a sofa in a sitting room, and 80–90cm for walkways.
  • Seat depth: deeper seats are more relaxed; shallower seats are better for upright sitting and smaller rooms.
  • Doorways and stairs: check the delivery route. Modular sofas arrive in sections, which solves most access problems.

2. Choose the colour carefully

Off-white bouclé is the classic, but it shows wear in busy homes. Warmer oatmeal, sand and taupe tones are more forgiving; grey and mushroom work in cooler-lit rooms. Ask for samples where available and look at them in your own light — see our sample page.

3. Fixed or modular?

A fixed three- or four-seater gives a cleaner silhouette. A modular sofa can be reconfigured into a corner or chaise as your room changes — for example the Tommy Franks Frankie Modular Sofa in Chex Polar Bouclé (£4,275) or the Blanco 5 Piece Modular Sofa (£2,871).

Frequently asked questions

Is a bouclé sofa practical for everyday use?

Yes, with sensible colour choice. Warmer, mid-tone bouclé hides daily wear better than bright white.

Does bouclé pill?

Some light pilling can occur on any textured fabric with heavy use. Gentle vacuuming and a fabric shaver keep it looking fresh.

Can I return a made-to-order bouclé sofa?

Eligible items can be returned free within 30 days of delivery. Made-to-measure, personalised or clearly customised items may have limited return rights unless faulty, so please check the terms before ordering. See Returns & Refunds.
