Armchair or accent chair?

The terms get used interchangeably, but the distinction is useful. An armchair is built for sustained sitting — deeper seat, fuller padding, a chair you read in. An accent chair is chosen primarily for how it looks and is often shallower and firmer; it works in a bedroom corner or beside a console where nobody sits for an hour.

Buy the wrong one and the disappointment is predictable: a beautiful accent chair in the spot where someone wanted to read, or a deep lounge chair swallowing a small bedroom.

Getting the size right

  • Seat depth — around 50–55cm suits most people for upright sitting. Deeper than 60cm and shorter sitters lose back support unless there are cushions.
  • Seat height — 42–47cm is comfortable to rise from. Lower lounge chairs look better but are harder to get out of, which matters in a hotel or for older clients.
  • Overall width — leave at least 60cm of clear floor in front, and allow a gap either side rather than pushing the chair against a wall.
  • Pairs — two armchairs facing a sofa need roughly 2.4m of wall to look deliberate rather than crammed.

Choosing by material

Bouclé adds texture without colour and photographs beautifully, but snags and holds pet hair. Velvet is hard-wearing and rich in colour, though it shows pressure marks. Woven and linen read relaxed and suit lighter schemes. Leather ages well and is the most practical in high-traffic rooms.

Trade and projects

Araco Interiors is a BIID Industry Partner. Armchairs are specified in volume for hotel suites, lounges and show homes. Araco Atelier pieces are made to order at approximately 8–12 weeks; many Tommy Franks armchairs are in stock for delivery within 3 working days. Trade pricing and multi-unit quotations are available. Frequently asked questions

What is a comfortable seat depth for an armchair?

Around 50–55cm for upright sitting and reading. Deeper seats are for lounging and generally need a cushion for shorter sitters.

How much space does an armchair need?

Allow at least 60cm of clear floor in front, and don't push it flat against a wall — a small gap makes the chair read as a piece rather than furniture stored at the edge of a room.

Are bouclé armchairs practical?

In sitting rooms and bedrooms, yes. In homes with cats or heavy family use, the looped weave snags and collects hair — velvet or leather is the better choice.

How long do they take to arrive?

Tommy Franks armchairs held in stock are delivered within 3 working days. Araco Atelier armchairs are made to order at approximately 8–12 weeks.

How to choose luxury furniture

Begin with measurements, not with images. Map the piece onto your floor with tape before you commit, and check the route in — doorways, stair turns and lift dimensions defeat more sofas than anything else. Our team can confirm carton dimensions for any piece before you order.

Fabric is the decision people most often revisit. Bouclé brings warmth and tactile depth and suits layered, textural interiors; woven and PU finishes wipe clean and are better suited to family rooms and hospitality settings. We provide free bouclé samples across all ten Araco Atelier colourways — assess them in your own light, against your own walls, before deciding.

For trade and hospitality projects, specify for durability as well as appearance. Contract-quality frames, high-rub-count fabrics and serviceable components matter far more over a five-year horizon than the initial photograph.
