What bouclé actually is

Bouclé takes its name from the French for looped. The yarn is spun with deliberate loops along its length, and when woven those loops sit proud of the surface, giving the nubbed, slightly irregular texture the fabric is known for. It is a construction rather than a fibre, which is why bouclé varies so widely in quality between suppliers.

The texture is the reason it photographs and reads so well in neutral schemes. A flat weave in the same colour looks like a block; bouclé catches light across its loops and gives depth without introducing pattern or colour.

The six colourways

Wicker, Pebbles, Ashlar, Hazel, Daisy and Porcini. The palette runs from warm sand and warm grey through stone to mushroom, so a whole scheme can be built within one family without matching exactly.

How to choose

• Sofas in the paler colourways suit formal sitting rooms and low-traffic spaces. For family rooms, the mid and deeper tones hide marks far better.
• Armchairs are where bouclé works hardest — a single textured chair lifts a neutral room without needing colour.
• Benches at the end of a bed or in a hallway add texture at low level, where it reads without dominating.
• Upholstered beds in bouclé give a headboard real presence in an otherwise plain bedroom.

Living with bouclé

The looped surface is durable but it is a texture, not a flat weave, so it holds dust and pet hair more readily than a plain fabric. Vacuum with an upholstery attachment rather than brushing. Pulled loops should be trimmed level with scissors, never pulled through. In homes with cats, a tighter-loop colourway is the sensible choice.
