Why brass, and how it behaves
Brass is warm-toned metal, and that warmth is what it brings to a light fitting: it pushes the colour of the light slightly amber and it reads richer at low output than chrome, nickel or black. It is also directional in a way alabaster is not — a brass shade throws a defined pool of light downwards rather than glowing in every direction, which is why it suits worktops, reading positions and dining tables where you want the light to land somewhere specific.
Solid brass is a living finish. Antique brass is darkened deliberately and will continue to develop depth with handling. Lacquered and satin finishes hold their colour far longer. Neither is better, but it is worth choosing deliberately, because finishes that age will not stay matched to finishes that do not.
The three brass finishes
- Satin brass — brushed to a soft, low-sheen surface. The most forgiving finish: it hides fingerprints, sits comfortably with oak, walnut and stone, and is the safest choice when mixing metals elsewhere in a room.
- Antique brass — darkened and aged deliberately, with depth in the recesses. Suits period properties, panelled rooms and schemes built on darker timber and deeper colour.
- Polished brass — bright and reflective, closest to gold. The most formal of the three, and the most demanding: it shows marks, and it wants a room with enough contrast to carry it.
Where brass lighting works
- Over a kitchen island or dining table — brass pendants give the defined downward pool that task positions need, and the metal warms the light over food.
- Hallways and reading positions — brass wall lights are more directional than alabaster, which makes them better where you want light on something specific.
- Against dark joinery or deep paint — brass is one of the few finishes that lifts a dark scheme without fighting it.
- Mixed with stone and timber — brass is a natural partner to oak, walnut, marble and plaster, which is why it recurs in material-led interiors.
Mixing brass with other metals
Mixing is fine, and usually better than matching everything. The workable rule is to let one metal dominate and use the second as an accent, and to keep the tones consistent — warm with warm. Brass sits well with bronze and aged nickel. It sits poorly with bright chrome, where the temperature clash reads as an accident rather than a decision.

Free UK delivery on every order, with one exception: Tala. Tala ships on the supplier's own delivery rates, shown at checkout, with standard UK delivery of 4–5 working days. Everything else is delivered free within the UK with no minimum spend, on an approved UK delivery promise of 3–5 working days once dispatched.

To clean, dust with a dry soft cloth. Do not use metal polish or abrasive cleaner on antique or lacquered brass; it will strip the finish.

Does brass lighting tarnish?
Antique brass is darkened deliberately and will continue to develop depth over time. Lacquered and satin finishes hold their colour far longer. Choose deliberately if you need fittings to stay matched.
What is the difference between satin, antique and polished brass?
Satin is brushed and low-sheen, antique is deliberately darkened and aged, polished is bright and reflective. Satin is the most forgiving in everyday use.
Can I mix brass lighting with chrome or black fittings?
Brass mixes well with bronze and aged nickel, and with black used as a structural accent. It sits awkwardly with bright chrome because the colour temperatures conflict.
Is brass lighting suitable for bathrooms?
Only IP44-rated designs, and only in Zone 2 and Zone 3. Selected CTO Lighting designs are available IP44-rated. Standard fittings are not suitable.
How do I clean brass light fittings?
Dust with a dry soft cloth. Avoid metal polish, solvents and abrasive cleaners, which strip the finish.

How to choose designer lighting
Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.
Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.
For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.

Yes. Every alabaster piece we sell uses genuine honed natural alabaster. Because it is a natural stone, veining and translucency vary from piece to piece — this variation is intrinsic to the material.
