How to choose a pendant light

Three decisions matter more than the rest: scale, hanging height and whether you need one fitting or several.

  • Over a dining table — a single pendant should be roughly one third the table width. A linear pendant should be about two thirds the table length. Hang the base 75–85cm above the tabletop so it lights the surface without blocking sightlines.
  • Over a kitchen island — two or three pendants spaced evenly, or one linear fitting. Keep the same 75–85cm clearance above the worktop.
  • In a stairwell or double-height hall — scale up considerably. A fitting that looks large in a showroom reads small in a void. Cluster pendants or a multi-head chandelier suit these spaces better than a single small shade.
  • Beside a bed — a pair of small pendants frees the bedside table entirely. Hang them roughly at seated shoulder height.

Choosing by material

Alabaster is translucent, so light passes through the stone and glows without glare — the softest option, and the one that suits calm material-led interiors. Brass and bronze direct light downward and give a warmer, more defined pool, useful over islands and worktops. Architectural glass refracts and sparkles, which reads as more formal and works well in dining rooms and entrance halls.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a pendant light hang?

Around 75–85cm from the tabletop or worktop to the base of the fitting. In a hallway or open space with no furniture beneath, keep at least 2.1m of clearance from the floor.

How many pendants do I need over an island?

Two or three for a standard island, spaced evenly with roughly equal gaps at each end. Three smaller fittings usually read better than two large ones.

Can pendant lights be dimmed?

Integrated LED designs generally can, with a compatible trailing-edge dimmer. For G9 and E27 fittings it depends on the lamp. Contact us for the specification on a particular design.

Are any suitable for bathrooms?

Selected CTO Lighting designs are available in IP44-rated versions suitable for Bathroom Zone 2 and Zone 3. Standard pendants are not rated for bathroom use.

How long do pendant lights take to arrive?

Tala is generally in stock. CTO Lighting and Araco Lumière are handcrafted to order at approximately 5–7 weeks. Lead times are shown on each product page.

How to choose designer lighting

Start with the role the light needs to play. A statement pendant over a dining table or kitchen island sets the tone for the whole room, so scale matters more than anything — as a rule, allow roughly one third of the table width and hang the base 75 to 90cm above the surface.

Wall lights and sconces work in pairs and are best positioned at eye level, roughly 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. Alabaster is the material of choice for luxury lighting because it is genuinely translucent: light passes through the stone rather than bouncing off it, producing a warmth that no manufactured diffuser reproduces. Every piece of alabaster is unique, so expect natural variation in veining.

For bathrooms, check the IP rating. Zone 2 and Zone 3 require IP44 as a minimum. If your scheme uses DALI or a central dimming system, confirm compatibility before ordering — several CTO Lighting pieces are available in DALI-A and DALI-B variants.

Is the alabaster genuine natural stone?
