Measure the route, not just the room

The most expensive mistake in sofa buying is a sofa that fits the room but not the way into it. Before ordering, measure the narrowest point of the route — doorways, the turn at the top of a stairwell, the width of a lift. Compare against the sofa's height and depth, since most sofas go through a door on their side.

If access is tight, a modular design that arrives in sections solves the problem outright. Tell us your access constraints before ordering and we will check the dimensions against them.

Getting the proportions right

• Length — a sofa should occupy around two thirds of the wall it sits against. Much more and the room feels full; much less and it looks stranded.
• Depth — 90–95cm suits upright sitting. 100cm and beyond is for lounging, and needs cushions for shorter sitters.
• Coffee table gap — leave 40–45cm between the sofa and the table.
• Walkways — allow at least 75cm for a route behind or beside the sofa.

Choosing the fabric

Bouclé gives texture and depth in neutral schemes, but the looped weave snags and holds pet hair — best in formal sitting rooms rather than family spaces. Velvet is durable and rich but shows pressure marks. Linen reads relaxed and creases as part of its character. Leather is the most forgiving in daily use and improves with age.

Material samples can be arranged across all 10 Araco Atelier colourways before you commit. Given that made-to-order sofas cannot be returned once production starts, this is worth doing.

How do I know a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the narrowest point on the delivery route and compare it against the sofa's height and depth, as most are carried through on their side. Send us your measurements and we will check before you order.

What sofa depth is comfortable?

90–95cm for upright sitting, 100cm or more for lounging. Deeper sofas need cushions for shorter sitters to keep back support.

Can a made-to-order sofa be returned?

No. Once production has started, made-to-order pieces cannot be returned, which is why we recommend samples first.
